TopLoft Playroom Design

Key to a successful playroom is safety, storage space, cleanliness and comfort.

Loft playroom designs need have secure doors, space saving storage cupboards built into the design, easy clean surfaces and areas designed for purpose such as hard and soft floorings.

Because loft stairs can be a little steeper than those in the rest of the house we would recommend solid doors and enclosed staircases. These not only add security, but they contain noise, light and help to maintain temperatures.

Fitted units and built in cupboards are the perfect solution for storage of toys, games, and soft and larger play items.

Playroom designs will tend to have smaller storage cupboards along the side walls - the knee wall. This is a partial height vertical wall placed where the roof meets the house wall. In loft conversions the storage space behind the knee wall can be used for storage and closing doors can be added.

To maximise storage space we can build-in floor to ceiling or even a walk in storage cupboards.

The loft designs shown are featured in the Velux windows cataloue. Velux have the size and style of window for any roof. Velux skylights can even be coupled together for light and design effects.

Designing for daylight

Lofts designed for daytime need maximum natural light, designing for this alows us to spread windows over the roof or insert them into the loft walls.

Loft conversions usually requires the equivalent of 10% of the floors area as glazing. When designing for more light Velux recommend an increase to 20%.

Placing windows on either side of the roof and using several smaller windows, rather than fewer but larger ones will enhance the light distribution and reduce shadowed areas.
